HOW DO I GET TO WAHIAWA BOTANICAL GARDENS
BY CAR – From Waikiki – Take Ala Wai Boulevarde and McCully Street to I-H-1W. Continue on I-H-1W and take I-H-1W and I-H-2N to HI-99N. Take exit 8 from I-H-2N and drive to California Avenue in Wahiawa.
(24.6 miles/One hour and five minutes).
BY BUS – From Waikiki – At Kuhio Avenue and Nahua Street catch The Bus #13 towards LILIHA-Wyle Street. Alight at Alapai Street and S King Street. Walk to Alapai Transit Centre (stops 1-4). Catch The Bus #62 towards Wahiawa Heights. Alight at California Avenue and Hauola Avenue and walk one minute to Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. (two hours and ten minutes).
A BRIEF HISTORY WAHIAWA BOTANICAL GARDENS
Wahiawa Botanical Gardens is a twenty seven acre garden and forested gorge situated on a high plateau in central Oahu between Wai’anae and Ko’alau mountain ranges.
It was used in the 1920’s by sugar planters as an experimental arboretum and opened as a botanical garden in 1957.
WHAT CAN I SEE AND DO AT WAHIAWA BOTANICAL GARDENS
Pick up a map at the visitor centre and take a self guided tour and discover the amazing selection of native hawaiian plants, the aroid collection (plants of the arum family), tree ferns and epiphytic plants (lichens, mosses, ferns, cacti, orchids and bromeliads). NOTE: Make sure you bring along good walking shoes, and umbrella and mosquito repellant.
