BRIEF HISTORY OF FOSTER BOTANICAL GARDEN
The Foster Botanical Garden covers fourteen acres in the middle of bustling Honolulu and is the oldest of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. Some of the trees were planted by Dr William Hillebrand, a german physician and botanist, in the 1850’s.
In 1853 Dr Hillebrand leased 4.6acres from Queen Kalama and built his home on the land. Twenty years later he returned to Germany and in 1884 the land was sold to Thomas R Foster and his wife Mary Foster who lived there and continued to develop the garden. Mary Foster died in 1930 and left the land and the family home to the City and County of Honolulu.
Dr Harold Lyon, who was the first director of Foster Botanical Garden created the famous orchid collection here. The garden was expanded to l4 acres by Paul Weissich who was the director from 1957 to 1989.
